These services encourage lenders to give better deals so that brokers will suggest their companies, and brokers make it easier for the consumer to find a good deal on a mortgage. A Middle Man

It is frustrating in this day and age that convenience and laziness make room for middle men, and end up costing you more, but if consumers are willing to pay for this service a mortgage broker will continue to provide it. You by no means need to hire a mortgage broker to get the best mortgage rates - and in most cases can do just fine without a broker if you are willing to do some research. But if you are strapped for time and cash, a broker may help you get a good rate from mortgage lenders and save you money down the road. It all depends on the circumstances. If you need a bad credit mortgage it may be wise to use a mortgage broker because they know the system better than you and will assure you not be taken advantage of.
Remember that a mortgage broker doesn't actually loan you money, he just finds someone to loan it to you. So don't be willing to pay him very much at all. Usually we like to say "you get what yo pay for", and that is true in this case, but since there are a finite number of loans out there, there is a finite price to pay for the services. A mortgage broker shouldn't charge much because economic reasons won't allow them to, but sometimes companies slip through the rocks and charge insane amounts.
